Benefits of SIP Lines With VoIP

The NBN is rolling out Australia wide, and avoiding any interruptions to business communications, companies are starting to investigate what is required for them to be ready.

We previously released an interview series which covered the pitfalls to avoid when switching your business to the NBN network. Today, we are talking about how businesses can benefit from SIP lines with Voip. I’m actually chatting with David Colletta, Managing Director of Prosum.

Caroline: David, what is SIP?

David: SIP is a standards communication protocol, which allows calls to be established between two or more parties. It’s quickly becoming the norm in replacing the legacy type analogue and digital lines, and most often it’s delivered via the internet.

Caroline:  What makes it so popular?

David: What makes SIP so popular is its flexibility. It has the ability to work over the internet, which everyone has access to. Or, if you want an experience of unsurpassed quality, it can also be delivered over a private connection. So, the entry and support costs are also significantly lower than traditional lines, with typical savings that can be anywhere up to 50%.

Caroline: Right. 50%? Wow. That’s a significant saving for businesses.

David: Absolutely right. That’s why we’re seeing the trend moving away from cumbersome hardware-based architecture that’s been delivered for many, many years to more of this software-based solution where we see all the savings.

Caroline: What are the main benefits of SIP lines for businesses?

David: The main benefits that we see, Caroline, is that SIP can scale up and down very easily. Whereas, with the old legacy type, very hard to scale down. Always been easier to scale up and not so good when we have to scale down. It actually has quite powerful features in that respect. Businesses do downsize, businesses do change and grow as well. It allows growth that scale can’t really get out of hardware-based lines.

The redundancy piece in SIP is far better, so it allows businesses to plan for redundancy because of that technology SIP has. Really, it’s around the core costs. Because of the lower entry price SIP, the rest flows. There’s lower call costs and lower ongoing maintenance costs. So, quite a powerful reason to move towards SIP.

Caroline: Why would businesses choose SIP over the other options out there, and how do they make that decision?

David:  The first thing is to ensure that you’ve got the ability to have SIP delivered to your premise. The decision has to be made around whether you’re going to be using internet to drive SIP, or whether you want to have a dedicated connection for SIP, these are the questions that you should engage a telecommunications partner, to just understand the preference and they can make you aware of the benefits of both.

Primarily the reasons behind both are one, to save costs, driving SIP down the internet path, as opposed to wanting the absolute best quality, to having the reason for having a dedicated SIP service. Ultimately, weighing them both up with the cost. So, once you establish the site as a qualification, and you know that SIP is possible at your location, then the next step is to decide how you want that delivered into your building.

Caroline: So, there appear to be many options available for businesses in terms of their communications and the needs of the individual business as well. What I understand is that getting advice from experts who can tailor a solution for your specific business is integral, because there are so many options out there.

David:  Yes, absolutely. Some of the things to also be mindful of is who is providing the SIP?  Because SIP technology is software based, at times there are also negatives against that, which means that potentially you could be sourcing things that are not local in this country, could be delivered via other carriers external to Australia. So, you’d want to do some due diligence around who is providing the SIP technology as well. Is it local? Is it stored in local datacenters? Is it compatible with Australian numbers, emergency numbers, et cetera?

These are just some of the things to be on the lookout for, but ultimately, we just find that if you stick to Australian based companies, it should be fine. You’ll get the quality that you’re after, and also the compatibility with all Australian landlines, mobiles, national calls.

Caroline: So many variables to consider and there are always pros and cons to everything, so it’s really important to be able to make informed decisions by doing that due diligence and working with the experts in conducting an audit of your specific needs for your business.
